Greetings
Taking off from our first international conference on Stem Cell organized in Hyderabad in 2002, FABA is pleased to announce International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine: Research to Business to be held at Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad from March 22 to 24, 2012.
In a remarkably short span of time, Stem cells and Regenerative Medicine field has attracted a high level of interest from scientists, clinicians, industry and general public. Ever increasing advances in the field and potential applications of stem cell research findings to regenerative medicine are turning into global enterprise. Starting with an igniting discovery of derivation of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) by Dr. James A. Thomson at Wisconsin University and later followed by a more interesting discovery of induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) generation from a differentiated adult cell by Dr Shinya Yamanaka in University of Kyoto, Japan, continues to progress with phenomenal findings. Scientists all over the globe have made notable advances in stem cell biology and are translating the developments to clinical trials for select diseases such as Spinal cord injury, macular degeneration etc. In addition to pluripotent stem cells, advances in adult stem cells such as cord blood, mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, neural stem cells are contributing to find novel ways of treatment interventions for different diseases.
While the advances in stem cell research offers myriad possibilities for cell replacement and tissue repair for variety of diseases including Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, burns, cardiac disease, diabetes & arthritis, it is critical that research and regulatory policy approaches in stem cells and regenerative medicine are co-evolved, and are right in place to monitor safety and efficacy.
Asia comes of age, as several nations in Asia have shown extraordinary support and commitment to nourish the advances in the field and safely harvest these findings for larger good of public interest.
2011 to 2015 will be a defining period for the nascent stem cell industry in India due to the formation of the National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy (NAC-SCRT) by the Union Ministry of Health. This will be a stepping stone for the Indian Industry, and Entrepreneurs to take up the stem cell research and cell-based-therapies on a trajectory to next level. NAC-SCRT set up has been timely to monitor the stem cell research and applications in India and will play a crucial role in mustering the co-operative productivity from the emerging new companies in the Stem Cell Industry. After the FABA first conference on stem cell in 2002 by FABA, 156,000 scientific publications on PubMed, more than 3700 stem cell based clinical trials and about 3000 progenitor cell based clinical trails (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov) have been in progress.
The three-day international conference intends to create a common platform for exchange of information, ideas and business deals in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine with focus on therapeutics and to sift through the important findings in stem cell biology and clinical trials. The conference will bring international experience to the fore from the fields of academia, research and development, businesses and policy framework besides providing opportunities for networking, discussions on funding and forging new alliances.
The highlights of this Conference will be:
  • Bring several experts (academics, researchers, clinicians, industrialists and policy makers) on to one platform where they can exchange information, ideas and share their research findings
  • Large business MOUs and agreements can be entered into with international companies which will be the real stepping stones for the Indian Stem Cell Industry, particularly in area of therapy.
  • To create a single meeting that delivers compelling content with the aim of facilitating, accelerating and translating groundbreaking biomedical research and developments for the clinical transition of stem cell research.
  • To serve as a forum for Indian companies to forge new partnerships with rest of the world and opens doors for international companies to actively participate in this emerging industry and opens up new opportunities in the area of research, therapy, Industry and stem cell banking.
  • To throw limelight to foreign companies and give a right direction of entering into the Indian market that can help setting up a base in India.
This conference will feature more than 20 renowned international and national speakers and in-depth discussions on scientific discoveries, applications, business models, regulatory requirements and best practices.
